The Treadmill Tangle: A Gymnasium of Grande Proportions

amazing rosella. the perfect weightThe air in the exclusive “Equine & Exotic” fitness center was thick with the scent of eucalyptus, protein powder, and existential dread. In the corner, a triad of global superstars was gathered around a row of high-tech treadmills, creating a scene that was equal parts bizarre and bewildering.

Lady Gaga, resplendent in a neon-leotard-and-feather-boa ensemble that defied both gravity and gym etiquette, was in a state of visible distress. Before her, three of the most magnificent birds in the avian kingdom—a lorikeet named Sir Fluffington, a king parrot dubbed Reginald, and a cockatoo who went by the single name of Bartholomew—stood resolutely still on the rubberized belt of a top-of-the-line treadmill.

“Come on, Sir Fluffington! You can do it! Think of the cardiovascular benefits! Your little heart will thank you!” Gaga pleaded, her voice a coaxing melody.

Sir Fluffington, a vision in rainbow plumage, merely tilted his head and let out a sound that was suspiciously like a raspberry.

“Reginald, you’re a king! Kings don’t quit! They conquer!” she tried, gesturing to the king parrot, who was a splendid shade of crimson and emerald. Reginald responded by meticulously preening a single feather on his wing, ignoring her entirely.

“And Bartholomew, my philosophical friend, the rhythm of the run, australian birds and weightloss the poetry of motion… embrace it!” The cockatoo, a fluffy cloud of white with a skeptical yellow crest, simply blinked his dark eyes and let out a low, drawn-out squawk that translated, in any language, to “Nah.”

Gaga threw her hands up in despair. “I don’t understand! I’ve tried everything! Positive reinforcement, visualization, motivational speeches! Why won’t they use the treadmill?”

From a nearby set of weight benches, where she was effortlessly bench-pressing what appeared to be a small golf cart, Catherine Zeta-Jones lowered the bar with a soft clang. She dabbed her forehead with a monogrammed towel and offered a sympathetic smile. “Maybe they know they’re not members, darling,” she suggested, her voice a silken Welsh purr.

“They are members!” Gaga insisted, her voice rising in pitch. “I signed them up! They have their own keycards! Sir Fluffington’s has a little picture of a seed on it!”

Rihanna, who had been observing the entire spectacle from a yoga mat while simultaneously designing a new lingerie line on a tablet and sipping a glass of champagne, finally chimed in. She didn’t even look up from her screen. “They probably know you overpaid.”

The statement hung in the air, a perfect, diamond-encrusted truth bomb. Gaga froze. “I… what?”

“Think about it,” Rihanna said, finally deigning to glance their way. “You walked in here, demanded the ‘Platinum Avian package,’ and when they said it was ten grand a year, you probably just threw a Black Card at them and told them to keep the change for birdseed.”

Gaga’s face was a picture of indignant confusion. “Well, they have a very specific dietary regimen! And the seed is artisanal!”

Zeta-Jones nodded sagely. “Exactly. They’re not stupid, Gaga. They saw the invoice. They know you paid the ‘I Have More Money Than Sense’ surcharge. They have no incentive to run. They’re not chasing a goal; they’re just rich birds on a very expensive treadmill.”

Bartholomew the cockatoo let out a loud, derisive cackle, as if to confirm the theory. Reginald puffed out his chest, looking every inch the pampered monarch. Sir Fluffington began to meticulously clean his talons, utterly bored.

“Okay, fine!” Gaga conceded, a new fire in her eyes. “You want incentive? I’ll give you incentive!” She rummaged through her Hermès gym bag and pulled out a small, velvet pouch. “I have here,” she announced with dramatic flair, “the rarest, most exquisite, hand-reared, gold-leaf-dusted macadamia nuts known to bird-kind. The first one to walk for five minutes gets one.”

The birds eyed the pouch. There was a flicker of interest. A tiny, almost imperceptible shift in their posture. But it was Zeta-Jones who inadvertently sabotaged the entire operation. “Oh, those are lovely!” she exclaimed. “I have a bowl of those in my dressing room. My poodle, Daffodil, loves them. She says they’re frightfully moreish.”

The effect on the birds was instantaneous and profound. Their brief spark of motivation was extinguished, replaced by a look of utter betrayal. A poodle? They were being bribed with the same nuts a poodle was given for free? The ignominy was too great. Bartholomew let out a long, mournful screech that sounded like a deflating bagpipe. Reginald turned his back entirely. Sir Fluffington looked Gaga dead in the eye and slowly, deliberately, pooped on the treadmill’s pristine display panel.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake!” Gaga cried, throwing the pouch back in her bag.

Rihanna finally set down her tablet, a slow, mischievous smile spreading across her face. She sauntered over, her heels clicking on the rubberized floor. “You’re all thinking too small. It’s not about money or nuts. It’s about status. It’s about the brand.”

She pulled out her phone, tapped a few times, and a percussive, bass-heavy beat filled the gym. It was an unreleased track, unmistakably Rihanna. The birds’ heads snapped towards the sound.

“Watch and learn,” Rihanna said, stepping onto the treadmill next to the birds. She didn’t start walking; she started dancing. A slow, hypnotic, shoulder-and-hip movement that was pure, unadulterated cool.

The birds were transfixed. This wasn’t a human pleading with them. This was a goddess in motion. They hopped from their stationary treadmill onto Rihanna’s. Sir Fluffington began bobbing his head, his colorful feathers pulsing to the beat. Reginald started to sway. And Bartholomew, the stoic philosopher, actually began to shuffle his feet, matching Rihanna’s rhythm.

Gaga’s jaw was on the floor. Zeta-Jones applauded softly, a smile of genuine admiration on her face. “Well,” she said, “that’s what you get for hiring a consultant.”

Rihanna winked at Gaga. “The first lesson is free. The next one will cost you. And I don’t take payment in macadamia nuts.” She turned up the music, the beat dropping just as the three birds, led by the coolest woman on the planet, finally began to use the treadmill. The rhythmic thump-thump-thump of their tiny feet filled the gym, a bizarre and triumphant percussion solo. Gaga, for the first time all day, was speechless. Her birds were exercising, but it was Rihanna who was running the show.
